Role-playing games (RPGs) are the “novels” of video games, with players assuming control of a central character immersed in a story. As any fiction writer will attest, worldbuilding is an immensely powerful tool for bringing a story to life. While there are large teams of professionals who develop RPGs, many developers start out creating RPGs on their own, using any tools available to craft their games.
In this Adventurers workshop, students will learn the importance of worldbuilding in games, from creating regions and characters to writing fun and interesting quests and storylines. Instructors will show students how to build engaging spaces in their worlds so players can immerse themselves in the game’s setting. Students interested in developing their narrative and design skills can eventually find themselves in an exciting career in games, TV, film, and more!
By the end of the week, each Adventurer will be able to design, write, and create their own interesting worlds, questlines, and engaging stories.
Projects in this workshop may include: Designing and implementing a town or dungeon and creating custom characters and character classes
[My son] rarely talks about what he does in a camp. So when he volunteered information at the end of each day I knew he was loving the camp. The small group allowed him to get to know some of his camp peers and his instructors really well. On the last day of camp, before I even asked his thoughts, he asked ‘do I have any more camps with DigiPen this summer?’ Then he immediately went on to say he wanted to sign up for a bunch of them next summer because he learned so much.
